How BioteamAZ Approaches Crime Scene Cleanup in Scottsdale

Depending on the nature of the crime, the process of crime scene cleanup can vary in terms of duration and scope. Whether it’s a homicide or a theft, blood, bodily fluids, potential controlled substances, and other unknown biohazardous waste can be spread across a wide area, leading to increased contamination. Once the Scottsdale Fire and Police Departments have cleared the scene, we can begin our cleanup process:

  • Assessment – Prior to cleaning, our technicians will perform a thorough assessment of the crime scene to determine the scope of the impacted area, ascertain the type of contamination, identify everything that has been contaminated, and develop a comprehensive plan of action in order to most effectively treat the impacted area.

  • Removal of Contamination Source – Our technicians will then begin working to remove all items that have been contaminated. The range of contamination can be greatly dependent on the nature of the crime. Gunfire, drugs, and chemical deterrents can drastically widen the area of impact, spreading blood, bodily fluids, and potential pathogens well beyond the initial site of the crime.

  • Decontamination & Cleanup – We work methodically to disinfect all impacted areas using EPA-approved disinfectant chemicals on all non-porous items. Contaminated porous items (which includes personal items as well as flooring and drywall) will need to be properly removed and destroyed at a biohazardous waste treatment plant per the standards set out by the ADEQ regarding biohazardous waste.

How BioteamAZ Can Help You

Dealing with traumatic events is challenging on its own, without the added stress of cleanup and insurance concerns. Our Scottsdale team conducts thorough pre- and post-cleaning tests, retrieves vital documents, and aids you in overseeing the entire insurance claims process from start to finish.

Bacteria & Germ Testing

On an average day, if a person sees something that looks clean, they assume it is clean. However, we know that a visual inspection is only the beginning. Our technicians at BioteamAZ perform ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) tests at the beginning and end of our cleanup service. The ATP test allows us to measure the presence of actively growing microorganisms (bacteria). This helps us assess the impact of viable bacteria and organic debris on the property.

Personal Property List

Any porous or semi-porous items that have come into contact with bodily fluids will need to be properly treated and, most of the time, will need to be disposed of at an approved biohazardous waste treatment facility. This document is supported by photographs to show proof of loss of the items. This is especially important if you need to show proof of loss of personal property to your insurance company.

Document Retrieval

Paper is highly porous. If it has been directly impacted with blood or other potentially infectious materials, it must be transported to a medical waste facility for destruction. If we discover that any important documents have been damaged, the senior technician will discuss with you the procedures that need to be taken in order to salvage as much information from the documents as possible.

Post-Remediation Evaluation

We hold ourselves to the highest standards and upon request will provide a post-remediation certification to you, property management, or your insurance company.  We want to provide you with peace of mind that the property is safe to return to once we have completed our final evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

We work closely with all the first responders and will assist them if needed. However, we are a cleaning company, and our primary focus is to make sure that your home or property is safe from any biohazardous risks that may be present after a crime has occurred.

Prior to starting service, the police will need to release the scene or property back to the owners. At that point, we will be able to enter and assess the scope of work. In many situations, we can begin the cleanup process within 24 hours of being contacted.

Our first responder friends will have information on who to contact regarding the homicide itself, as well as grief counseling and funeral services if needed. Generally, they won’t be able to recommend specific companies for these services, but they will confirm if you need to call a biohazardous waste cleanup team to come out. We will be able to help with the cleanup as well as referrals to general contractors, mechanics, and even nearby hospitality/lodging if needed.

As soon as the police have completed their investigation, they will release the property back to the owner. At that point, we can begin our cleanup services. Each scene is different, but we can usually expect to finish our work within a day or two. We will give you our best time estimate when we arrive on scene so that you can plan accordingly.

We are prepared to help you out no matter the situation. If there are illicit drugs on the premises, we can assess and properly treat the impacted areas to neutralize any trace amounts or residue that is left behind. Our standards and attention to detail mean you can feel safe and secure in your home or property at the completion of our service.

In most cases, your insurance policy should cover the costs of a biohazard cleanup. Some policies have exclusions, so it is important to find out for sure from your insurance company. We will assist with the entire claims process, including documentation for items that were damaged or removed. This will help ensure you can get replacement value on the things that were impacted due to the criminal act that occurred.
